About

Roos van Well

My love for music has always been part of me. This already started when my mother was pregnant with me and she felt me eagerly kicking whenever my father played the piano. As a toddler I sang complete inventions by Bach while playing with duplo. When I heard the sound of a violin for the very first time, tears came rolling down my cheeks. By the time I was four, I was convinced: I want to play the violin. At nine years old I finally had my first violin lesson and I’ve never let go of my violin since. In addition, I composed, took piano and singing classes, and played in a number of youth musicals.

I completed my violin studies at the Fontys Conservatory with Jenny Spanoghe, where I graduated both as a performing and teaching musician. I’ve further enriched my musical development through materclasses by Mikhail Bezverkhny, the Storioni Trio, Hagai Shaham, Evgenia Epshtein, the Ysaye Quartet and others.

I’ve always been very active in the field of chamber music. I performed with various ensembles both in the Netherlands and abroad. I toured through Mexico with pianist Guillermo Quintero Rojas as Duo Mezzo Serio in 2007. I participated in the Orlando Festival, November Music and the Tromp Festival as a member of the CoBrA String Quartet. In 2008 I founded the Shalosh Trio – a piano trio that in addition to classical music specializes in folk music and tangos. I was a member of ensemble Lunapark from 2009 till 2014, who were dedicated to ‘digital folk music’. We released the album ‘A beautiful bed to lie down in’ in 2013. In 2009 I performed as a soloist in the theatre production ‘Duet’, based on the documentary of Jacqueline du Pré. I also performed as a soloist with the Orquesta de Guitarras de Xalapa conducted by Orvil Paz in 2013. I also enjoy regular collaborations with contemporary composers. In 2014 I performed at the ‘New meets Newer’ festival and in 2022 I participated in the Componistenatelier at the Gelderlandfabriek in Culemborg.

Besides being a performing artist, I’m a passionate violin teacher. I started my own violin practice in the centre of Den Bosch in 2016 and I’m a violin teacher at the Regionale Muziekschool ’s-Hertogenbosch since 2021. From 2009 till 2021 I’ve been teaching at the Muzelinck Centrum voor de Kunsten in Oss. My students won prices at the Prinses Christina Junior Concours, the Maassluise Muziekweek and the Concertgebouw Talentenjacht and several students have continued their studies at conservatories.

Apart from music, I’ve always been very interested in different cultures. I participated in volunteer projects in Moldova, Serbia, Armenia and Ukraine. In 2009 I was part of an exchange program in Ghana, where I created a documentary that has been included in the teaching material for high schools.
